The 2000 seated Carlton Cinema on O'Connell Street Dublin opened in 1938 after being built on the site of a smaller cinema.  The art Deco style builiding was designed by the architects Robinson and O'Keefe.

The first film ever shown in the Carlton was " The Awful Truth" starring Cary Grant, while it was the venue for the European premiere of the ground breaking Rock Around the Clock- featuring Bill Haley and the Comets in 1954.  Over the years, it also staged live concerts by artists such as Johnny Cash, Fats Domino and Marlene Dietrich.

It closed its dooors for the last time in October 1994.
